Spartans Selected 1st-Team All-District

league and All-District Teams.

Defensive tackle Parish Wimberly, and Place kicker Kyle Whitmore. Second
Team honors went to: Wide receiver Hank Oswald and Fullback Danny Wood.

similarly productive junior season. Joining him on the first team are
fellow Spartans Terry Mitchell at linebacker and junior Parrish Wimberly

Bell Closing in on All-Time
Leading Rusher, Scorer

SSDN Sports
Over the years, the
Spartans rushing game has been overshadowed because of their prominent
passing attack, but in the past 7 seasons, Start has produced 4-thousand
yard rushers, including Greg Wimberly(2002), Julian Nash (2005) and Troy
Bell (2007, 2008). In '07, Bell (Toledo City-League rushing leader, 1st
Team All-City) finished the season with 1,409-yards on 204 carries
while scoring 12 touchdowns.
This season, has been no
different for Bell, as he has compiled 1,335-yards on 156 rushes
(8.6-yards per carry) and has totaled 18 touchdowns after just 8 games.
Currently, the Start High School career-rushing record is held by
Brandon Carter (1998) with 3,054 yards. Troy Bell now needs just 170
yards over the next 2 ball games to surpass that mark. Bell is also only
2-touchdowns away from becoming the Spartans All-Time leading scorer,
the current mark is 31. Troy is currently coming off a 197-yard,
4-touchdown performance against Libbey, and will take the field again
this Friday night against St. John's Jesuit. Kickoff is slated for
7:00pm at Rogers High School.

Spartans Ruin Libbey
Homecoming, 42-0
Defense
Pitches Second Straight Shutout
Dave Gatwood
www.NWOPrepSports.com
Start head coach Pat
Gucciardo left the field at halftime yesterday shaking his head and
talking to himself. His team was ahead, 7-0, but their performance was
less than stellar and despite clearly winning the battle in the trenches
the Spartans were shooting themselves in the foot. Four turnovers, two
fumbles and two interceptions, had allowed the Libbey Cowboys to stay in
the game and Gucciardo knew on the long walk into his team's locker room
that he had to make his team understand that they had to improve their
execution or face a possible loss.
In the first three
minutes of the second half the entire complexion of the game changed
dramatically. Within those three minutes the previously hapless Spartan
offense scored three touchdowns on 7 plays, amassed 67 yards rushing,
and passed for 87 additional yards passing. In essence, in three minutes
the Spartans not only surpassed the entire first half performance but
also extinguished any dreams that the Cowboys may have had of winning
the game.
The lone first half
score came early in the first quarter and it came suddenly. After
struggling a bit on their first possession, the Spartans took advantage
of a poor punt by the Cowboys and struck immediately on a 18 yard
touchdown toss from quarterback Josh Giles to receiver Devin Price.
However, the remainder of the half was a comedy of errors for the
Spartans and an exercise of futility for the Cowboys.
For Start, moving the
ball on offense was not a problem as they totaled 168 yards of total
offense in the first half but untimely turnovers proved costly. For
Libbey, their was no offense as they managed only 22 yards on the ground
and 25 yards through the air but the good news was that they were still
in the game. Unfortunately, this all changed shortly after the teams
entered the field after halftime.
Once the Spartans took
charge of the game in the first three minutes after halftime the outcome
of the game was clearly determined. At that point the only issue became
what the final score would be. The Cowboys continued to struggle on
offense and it was clear that they lacked the firepower necessary to
come back against the Spartans.
The star for the Spartans on the
afternoon was senior running back, Troy Bell. Bell, who is quickly
zeroing in on the all-time Start rushing record, scored 4 touchdowns,
three rushing and one on a 46-yard pass reception, and amassed 196 yards
on the ground on 21 carries. |

Senior running-back, Troy
Bell, had a career day by scoring six touchdowns as Start dismantled
Woodward 61-0. The Spartans were playing without the services of 5
starters due to injury on Saturday afternoons game at Waite High
School's Mollenkopf Stadium. Backup quarterback, Josh Giles (playing for
the injured Aaron Newman) played near perfect completing 7 of 11 passes
for 151 yards and 2 scores, while Troy bell carried the ball 15 times
for 162 yards and accounted for 6 touchdowns (Single-game School
Record). Bell is also closing in on a two more school-records, as he
needs 540-yards to become the Single-Season Rushing Leader and 396-yards
to become the Career Rushing Leader at Start High School.
As well as
the offense played, the Spartan Defense was the story, holding Woodward
to 1 of 11 passing for minus 5 yards and only allowing 39 total
offensive yards (2nd in school history). The Spartans forced 6 turnovers
including a safety. Start is now 2-2 in the Toledo City League, and will
face the Libbey Cowboys (2-2) next Saturday afternoon at Cowboy Stadium
(1:30 pm. Kick-off). Woodward takes on the Bowsher Rebels. |

quarter, and Matt Cochell hauled in a 35-yard touchdown pass from
Central quarterback Dave Walender in the third quarter.
Start held Central's Rogers to 53 rushing yards on 16 carries. Rogers

Whitmer 4th Quarter Puts Away
Spartans
Toledo Blade
At Whitmer, the Panthers
outscored the Spartans 28-7 in the second half to break open a close
game.
Panther senior tailback Julian Nash had a huge night, scoring five
touchdowns and totaling 145 yards. Whitmer (1-3 overall, 1-0 City)
quarterback Joe Missler threw for two scores and was 18-24 for 246
yards.
Start (0-4, 0-1) tailback Troy Bell also had a big game with three
touchdowns and 223 yards.
T.J. Rowland had an 85-yard interception return for a touchdown to seal
the victory for the Panthers. |

Southview Claws Way to 28-12 Victory

Dave Gatwood
www.NWOPrepSports.com
The evening began poorly for the heavily
favored Southview Cougars. On the very first possession of the game, the
visiting Start Spartans drove 55 yards to the Cougars' 1 foot line and
looked poised to score before a tightened Cougar defense and an untimely
Spartan penalty forced Start to settle for a 13 yard Kyle Whitmore field
goal. Whitmore's field goal gave the Spartans an unexpected 3-0 lead but
it would be the last time that the Spartans would enjoy this position.
Despite their courageous goal line play, the
Cougars' offense did not respond with their own courageous play.
Instead, on their second play from scrimmage, the Cougars fumbled the
ball and the Spartans recovered at the Southview 31 yard line.

Irish, Titans should battle for City League crown
By Norm Wamer
Special to Toledo Free Press
Is this the season that the Toledo City
League football becomes the “Big Two” and the “Little Ten?” Some
coaches think so.
“Central Catholic and St. John's are way
ahead of the rest of us,” said Rogers coach Rick Rios at this week's
City League “Smoker.” Each City League coach humbly addressed fellow
coaches and the media, proclaiming how good their competition is and
how many problems their own teams have. Of course Rios didn't tell
everyone that his Rams dominated perennial state power Canton McKinley
in a recent scrimmage.
One of the “Big Two” doesn't see things
the way Rios does.
“I think both Whitmer and Rogers are going
to be very good; they're flying under the radar right now,” said St.
John's coach Doug Pearson. “Start is going to be pretty good as well.
I think the league will be better this year than it has been in a long
time. You better come and strap it up every week. For a while the
league has been the haves and the have nots, I don't see it that way
anymore.” Complete

Spartans Impressive
in Shoe Bowl
Dave Gatwood
NWOPrepSports.com
Spartan head coach Pat
Gucciardo entered preseason practice wondering whether he would be able
to find a quarterback to direct his complicated offensive schemes. For
the past several seasons, coach Gucciardo has had the services of an
experienced, quality quarterback and he was therefore able to direct his
primary attention to other areas of the Spartan offense. This season,
however, this was not the case but, now that the scrimmages are over and
the regular season begins next Friday it appears that Start will again
field one of the area's finest quarterbacks.
Friday evening the Start
Spartans played two fifteen minute quarters at Bowling Green's Doyt
Perry Stadium as part of their state allowed scrimmages. In the first
quarter the Spartans played Ken Jame's Northwood Rangers.

Newman steps up at Quarterback for Start

By ZACH SILKA
BLADE SPORTS WRITER
BOWLING
GREEN — It’s no secret that Start coach Pat Gucciardo is a great
developer of quarterbacks in the City League.
Since 2002, Start quarterbacks have produced more completions, more
passing yardage and more touchdown passes than any other Division-I team
in northwest Ohio.
That little nugget of information is prominently featured in the records
book section on the Start Spartans football program’s website, and Aaron
Newman showed signs of being the next in a line of great Start signal
callers under Gucciardo.
Newman, a junior seeing his first action in a high school football
contest, threw for a pair of touchdowns in the BCSN/Old Newsboys Shoe
Bowl presented by Columbia Gas last night at Doyt Perry Stadium.
The Spartans came from behind to defeat Northwood 13-12 in their first
scrimmage and then shut down Woodward 21-0 in the second contest of the
evening.
