How can I marry someone from a different country?

If you are a US Citizen and you have seen your fiancé(e) face to face within the last two years you have two options.

  1. apply for a fiancé(e) visa and bring  your fiancé(e) to the US and get married here.  (this process takes about 4-6 months)
  2. get married in your fiancé(e)’s home country and you return to the US and apply for a visa for a spouse of a US Citizen. (this process takes about 6-8 months)

If you are a Legal Permanent Resident (have a “green” card) you can only apply for a visa for a spouse.  The wait for the visa is 5-7 years.  If you become a US Citizen the visa would be available immediately after you become a US Citizen.
