Genealogy

The photo for the link is of my grandmother, Flora Matteson Palmer.  That line has been the most fruitful for my research.   Her mother was Eva Matteson Strong.  I had been able to trace the family back about three generations but no further.  There were well researched Strong lines emanating out of New England, but I was never able to link into them.

A few years ago, I placed a query on a Strong Family bulletin board seeking information about the family.  I did not get any responses until this spring, when a second cousin, Susan Porter responded to my question.  Her great-grandmother was a sister to my great-grandmother Eva.  Quite by accident, she had come upon two family Bibles which documented the family line and provided links into the extensive Strong family lineage.  As a result, we were able to show the possibility of four ancestors who came on the Mayflower.  That was a very exciting find and now must continue to try to find supporting documentation for the ties, though they seem quite sound.  I will try to post a pedigree later. The joy of genealogy research.

The other family lines are always in need of more time.  Two of Phyl's lines, namely the Hadley's and the Gutherys have proved quite fruitful.  We were also able to document that Phyl had two grandfathers and a great grandfather, all of whom, fought in the Civil war.  One, John Murphy was a member of the famous Iron Brigade that fought at Manassas, Bull Run, Gettysburg and throughout Virginia.  I wrote an essay about his service which is available below. The other links were carried over from the previous website.

1. Matteson Migration.  Links to an essay about the migration of my Matteson family line (Flora Mattison Palmer, Albert, James, Silas, Solomon, Jeremiah, Hezekiah, Henry II, HenryI) from Rhode Island through Vermont into Western New York.  Discusses some possible routes and  links them to modern highways.

2.  Holland Land Grants.  Links to a data base which lists the Matteson surname with its variants along with those families who link to my Matteson line.  Shows the date and location of their transactions with the company.  Right click and save the link target.

3.  Chautauqua Cemetery Listing.  Links to a .Pdf document listing the entries for the Matteson surname with all of its variants as well as those for the families that link to my line.  Those additional surnames are Mead, Miliman, Milliman, Milman, Millman, Percy, Strong, Whipple, White and Wright.  The document is fully indexed and contains the web addresses for the cemeteries.

4.  John Barrett Murphy, Civil War veteran.  John Murphy entered the military on 31 Aug 1861 and ended his military service on 3 Jul 1865.  He fought in some of the most famous battles and returned home unscathed.   The link is to a biographical essay.
